Gluteos and their importance

The muscle-tendon wrapping around the hip joint is of paramount importance, not only because it provides mobility of the joint, but also to help stabilize the bones and the soft structures around them. The malfunction or weakness of a muscle or a muscle group can lead to a loss of balance between the different structures that contribute to joint stability, causing injuries somewhere.

Muscles of the buttocks and fascia latea:

Fascia is the name given to a structure that covers a muscle. When you go to the butcher shop and see a piece of meat, it’s white and shiny. When it is found on the thigh, it is called fascia lata. On the lateral side of the thigh, the same fascia is very thick and strong, then called the ilio-tibial band. Extremely thick, this fascia supports the muscles of the lateral aspect of the thigh.

Muscles of the gluteal region:

The gluteus minimus is located below the gluteus medius and its function is to promote medial rotation of the hip and also assist in opening the thigh. It is also innervated by the superior gluteal nerve.

The gluteus medium forms the lateral mass of the buttock. It originates on the lateral aspect of the iliac bone and inserts into the greater trochanter of the femur. The middle gluteus is an abductor of the thigh (opens the thigh) and in gait stabilizes the pelvis so that we do not hobble.
